Scabies - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment Methods

Scabies is an infestation of the skin with the microscopic mite Sarcoptes scabei. The name Sarcoptes scabiei is derived from the Greek words sarx (the flesh) and koptein (to smite or cut) and the Latin word scabere. It is characterized by superficial burrows, intense pruritus (itching) and secondary infection. Scabies is spread by personal contact, e.g., by shaking hands or sleeping together or by close contact with infected articles such as clothing, bedding or towels. The infection spreads more easily in crowded conditions and in situations where there is a lot of close contact - like child-care centers or nursing homes. The most prominent symptom of scabies is intense itching particularly at night. The scabies mite is an obligate parasite and completes its entire life cycle on humans. Other variants of the scabies mite can cause infestation in other mammals such as dogs, cats, pigs, ferrets, and horses, and these variants can infest human skin as well. Scabies is a worldwide public health problem, affecting persons of all ages, races, and socioeconomic groups.

Scabies mites are very fastidious. Scabies rash appears as tiny red intensely itchy bumps on the limbs and trunk. Scabies can be spread by the insect itself or by the egg. Prompt action is required to rid a person of the insects and eggs. The areas of the body most commonly affected by scabies are the hands and feet (especially the webs of skin between the fingers and toes), the inner part of the wrists, and the folds under the arms. However, other forms of physical contact, such as mothers hugging their children, is sufficient to spread the mites. In a classic scabies infection, anywhere from 5-15 mites live on the host. Little evidence of infection exists during the first month, but after 4 weeks and with subsequent infections, a delayed-type IV hypersensitivity reaction to the mites, eggs, and scybala occurs. Because of the contagious nature of scabies, doctors often recommend treatment for entire families or contact groups to eliminate the mite.

Causes of Scabies

The common causes and risk factor's of Scabies include the following:

A mite (Sarcoptes scabiei) which burrows under the skin.

An arthropod of the order Acarina.

Skin-to-skin contact.

Physical contact, such as mothers hugging their children.

Contact with someone else who is infected with it.

Sharing clothing or bedding with an infected person can spread the mites.

Symptoms of Scabies

Some sign and symptoms related to Scabies are as follows:

Intense itching, especially at night and over most of the body.

Pus-filled bumps.

Impetigo, a bacterial skin infection.

Scabies burrows.

Sores on the body caused by scratching.

Generalised rash.

Treatment of Scabies

Here is list of the methods for treating Scabies:

Several topical treatments exist for scabies, the most common of which are Kwell lotion (lindane) and Elimite (permethrin).

Topical (surface) medications are often effective and must be applied thoroughly to all skin from the face down, especially to areas known to be primarily affected (skin folds, etc.).

If scabies is suspected, the doctor may scrape a small part of the affected skin and examine the scrapings under a microscope for signs of scabies mites.

Two medications commonly prescribed are permethrin (Elimite, Acticin) and crotamiton (Eurax).

Benzyl benzoate emulsion.

The doctor may prescribe antibiotics if your child develops a bacterial skin infection such as impetigo in addition to the scabies infection.

Doctors sometimes prescribe oral medications for people with altered immune systems or for people who don't respond to the prescription lotions and creams.

Treximet - A New Migraine Medication

On May 16, Glaxo-Smith-Kline Pharmaceuticals, the makers of Imitrex, announced that they were releasing a new drug for the treatment of migraines. The new drug was to be called Treximet and according to the makers, was to be a vast improvement over Imitrex. Like Imitrex, it is made to be taken at the onset of a migraine, but is supposed to work faster and better to reduce migraine pain. GSK has spent several years and millions of dollars researching and "pre-marketing" Treximet in anticipation of FDA approval and product launch.

So what's the deal? Is this really better than Imitrex alone? From a strict treatment point of view, yes, the medication probably is better than Imitrex alone for a migraine. The reason for this is twofold. First of all, several years ago, Dr. Silberstein of the Jefferson Headache Center was able to demonstrate through research, that Imitrex combined with naprosyn taken at the onset of a migraine was better in treating that migraine than either drug alone. Such a combination is deemed synergistic, meaning basically that two plus two equals ten. Naprosyn is the prescription form of Aleve which is sold over the counter and is an anti-inflammatory. Once this research was confirmed, GSK began to develop a combination drug.

The second reason this drug might be better is something called RT technology. GSK has developed this and uses it currently for its Imitrex tablets. Think of it as "burst" technology as the tablet does burst apart when it begins to dissolve. This may speed absorption, and speed is of the essence when treating a bad migraine.

All treatment benefits aside, is Treximet really a great deal? Well for some, maybe not. One of the reasons a combination drug is usually developed is because the patent on the original drug is about to expire. And sure enough, that is what is happening to Imitrex this year. Unfortunately, samples of Imitrex are rapidly disappearing from doctor's offices. For those who have prescription coverage, the best answer is to ask for a prescription for naprosyn and take both pills at the onset of a migraine. Failing that you could just take two Aleve tablets with your Imitrex.

For those with no prescription coverage, hang in there! Two pharmaceutical companies who make generic drugs have announced that they will be manufacturing sumatriptan (generic Imitrex) by the end of 2008. Once that is available, it will open up the availability of the drug for millions of migraineurs who previously could not afford the drug. Even with no prescription coverage, the generic may be cheap enough to afford by paying cash. The downside to generics is, different fillers which are cheaper are used in manufacture. GSK still holds the patent on RT technology so it most probably will not be available in the generic sumatriptan.

As will all medications in the class of triptans, you cannot take these medications if you are pregnant, have uncontrolled hypertension or heart problems such as coronary artery disease. Check with your provider to be sure before taking any new medication and remember, treat early and treat fast to get rid of migraines.

Rising Demand For Herbal and Ayurveda Products

India is the known as the birthplace of Ayurveda as the great Himalayan mountain range, which forms its northern frontier, is also the source of many herbs that are used in Ayurvedic products. In today's globalization era more and more Indians are choosing to work outside India leading to a rise in the diaspora population. The swelling population of Indians across the globe has led to the popularity of Ayurveda, which in turn has led to a rise in the demand for Herbal Products. Herbal Products, which have been made by following the principles of Ayurveda, which is a five thousand year old system of medicine.

Preparations made from Plant extracts are sought after by patients all across the globe as they have minimal side effects. However, it would be an exaggeration that ayurvedic products have no side effects. Since Ayurvedic preparations are made from plant extracts they help in healing a complication in the natural way. Popular herbs, which are used in the preparation of medicinal formulations, include Amalaki, Arjuna, Ashvagandha, Brahmi, Karela, Lasuna, Neem, Shuddha Guggulu, Shallaki, Tagara, Triphala, Tulasi etc.

In view of the rising popularity of Ayurveda, major pharmaceutical companies who until now were involved in the manufacture of allopathic drugs have forayed into this market segment. The entry of organized players has led to increased investments in Drug manufacturing, R&D and Logistics. Ayurvedic drugs are now being produced in accordance with the established principles laid down by the regulatory authorities. So patients can be assured of the safety of a drug purchased from any of these companies. Distribution and marketing has improved as companies have spotted a huge opportunity in the overseas market. Patients located in any corner of the globe can order herbal products from the online storefront set up by these companies.

Popular Herbal formulations which have acquired popularity in foreign markets include Serpina, Liv.52, Bonnisan, Reosto, Menosan, PureHands, Himplasia. Apart from medicinal formulations other preparations made from herbal extracts like Acne-n-Pimple Cream, Anti-dandruff Hair Oil, Anti-dandruff Shampoo, Anti-wrinkle Cream, Baby Cream, Baby Lotion, Baby Powder, Diaper Rash Cream, Hair Loss Cream, Muscle & Joint Rub, Nourishing Baby Oil, Sunscreen Lotion.

These days, herbal products are not only used for the treatment of humans but also for animals. Ayurvedic drugs and therapies are also being prepared to alleviate the sufferings of animals and improve their heath. Improved health of livestock leads to animal and dairy products, which are safe for human consumption.

Side Effects of Some Drugs that Are Lowering Blood Pressure(part One)

Lowering blood pressure is a condition that is below the normal expected for an individual in a given environment. Blood pressure differs deeply with activity, age, medications, and underlying medical conditions

Some of the Drugs have some side effects that can cause lower blood pressure include blood pressure drugs, diuretics (water pills), heart medications (especially calcium antagonists-nifedipine/Procardia, beta blockers-propranolol/Inderal and others), depression medications (such as amitriptylene/Elavil), and alcohol.

Diuretics — diuretics are a big evil of lower blood pressure. It could cause lack of potassium in your body. Usually after taking diuretics, patient may suffer from weakness, leg cramps, or being tiredness however, it is not permanent. A patient can avoid these problems by taking some potassium tablets with diuretics. Diuretics such as amiloride (Midamar), spironolactone (Aldactone) or triamterene (Dyrenium) are called "potassium sparing" agents and provide equal of amount of potassium to your body. A lower blood pressure patient with diabetes can have some problems with diuretics. It may increase the blood sugar level. So, it is recommended to take permission from doctor before taking it.

Beta-blockers — patients of lower blood pressure feel insomnia, cold hands and feet, tiredness or depression, a slow heartbeat or symptoms of asthma after taking Beta-blockers. Patients of diabetes need to care while taking this medicine.

ACE inhibitors — a required amount of ACE inhibitors not effect badly to lower blood pressure patient but the drugs, such as captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), lisinopril (Zestril or Prinivil), may cause a skin rash; loss of taste; a chronic dry, hacking cough; and in rare instances, kidney damage.

Angiotensin II receptor blockers — another evil for the patients of lower blood pressure. A patient may feel occasional faintness, so take care, and ask your doctor before taking the drug.

Calcium channel blockers —lower blood pressure patient may suffer from palpitations, swollen ankles, constipation, headache, or dizziness with this medicine. Form of Calcium channel blockers are Diltiazem (Cardizem), nicardipine (Cardene), Nifedipine (Procardia) and verapamil (Calan or Isoptin) which is injurious in lower blood pressure.

These side effects will continue in the next article "Side effects of some drugs that are Lowering Blood Pressure(part two)"

Common High Blood Pressure Medications - Know These 8 Types

There are eight common medications used to treat high blood pressure. While many people dealing with hypertension will possibly be prescribed a combination of a variety of these medications, the amount of medication needed depends greatly on the type and the level of severity of the illness.

While antihypertensive medicines are used to lower blood pressure to normal levels, medications should always be used in combination with a healthy lifestyle change. The main objectives of high blood pressure medications are to not only lower blood pressure but to minimize the side effects caused by some of the medicines.

Diuretics

Water pills are used to remove excess salt from the body. The increase in salt in a person's body causes the blood vessels to retain more fluid than needed. The release of excess fluid in blood vessels, takes a strain off the vessels and arteries.

Examples: Thalitone, Lasix, Esidrix, Lozol, Dyazide, and Maxzide.

Beta-Blockers

Beta-Blockers are used to reduce the amount of blood pressure flowing through the body, by slowing the heart rate down, it allows for an optimal flow of blood throughout the vessels.

Examples: Sectral, Tenormin, Coreg, Lopressor, Toprol, Corgard, Inderal and Blocadren.

ACE Inhibitors (Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors)

The hormone Angiotensin II can cause the blood vessels to narrow; ACE inhibitors stop that hormone from production.

Examples: Lotensin, Vasotec, Prinivil, Zestril, Accupril, Altace, and Mavik.

ARBs (Angiotensin II receptor blockers)

This medication defends blood vessels from narrowing affects from angiotensin II.

Examples: Atacand, Avapro, Cozaar, Benicar, Micardis, and Diovan.

CCBs (Calcium channel blockers)

Calcium entering from the body's cells can cause blood vessels to constrict, CCB's stop that from happening.

Examples: Norvasc, Cardizem, Cartia, Dilacor, Tiazac, Plendil, Cardene, Adalat, Procardia, Calan, Covera, Isoptin, and Verelan.

Alpha-Blockers

Alpha-Blockers are used to reduce nerve pressure to allow blood to pass in vessels more freely.

Examples: Cardura, Minipress, and Hytrin.

Centrally acting drugs

Centrally acting drugs work with a person's brain chemistry to control nerve impulses that narrow the blood vessels.

Examples: Catapres and Methyldopa.

Direct vasodilators

Direct vasodilators perform by widening the blood vessels to allow more blood to circulate.

Examples: Apresoline and Loniten.

Are Antibiotics Really Needed to Treat Ear Infection?

The idea of "delaying antibiotic treatment"

Some kids really need antibiotics, but most do not. Recent study has shown that two-thirds of the antibiotic prescriptions written to parents urged to delay treatment never got filled. The idea of delaying antibiotic treatment for ear infections is not new. The strategy is catching on in Europe, and the American Academy of Pediatrics says 80% of children whose ear infections are not treated immediately with antibiotics get better on their own.

Far too often people get antibiotics for earaches. Many supposed ear infections aren't ear infections at all, just earaches. Ear infections have fluid, by definition.

Antibiotics for ear infection

The 2004 American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines for the treatment of ear infections includes specific recommendation of how antibiotics should be used in different situations. Most ear infections do not need antibiotics at all.

If antibiotics are used, high-dose amoxicillin is the best choice for most children - along with treatment for their ear pain.

If the child is allergic to amoxicillin, then Ceftin, Omnicef, or Vantin are the preferred choices. If the child is also allergic to all four of these, then Zithromax or Biaxin are the recommended alternatives.

If the child with the ear infection has a fever over 102.2 F or is severely ill, then the best starting antibiotic is usually Augmentin.

Whatever the initial antibiotic, it should be changed if there is not clear improvement within 48 to 72 hours. High-dose Augmentin is usually the best follow-up choice.

Five things to know before giving antibiotic to children:

1. Antibiotics only work on ear infections that are bacterial in origin, they do nothing for those caused by viruses such as colds, allergies, mechanical obstructions, or nutrition.

2. Antibiotics do not permanently eliminate build-up fluid in the middle ear, the source of chronic ear infections.

3. A study in The Journal of the American Medical Association reported that children who took Amoxicillin for chronic infections were actually 2-6 times more likely to have a recurrence of fluid build-up.

4. Excessive antibiotic use can disrupt the balance of beneficial intestinal bacteria and can lead to digestive disturbances and recurrent infections.

5. Antibiotics do not help pain during the most painful first 24 hours, and help pain only minimally after that.

Careless use of antibiotics can also lead to more resistant bacteria in the environment, making common infections harder to treat in everyone.

The Best Male Enlargement Patch - Why Patches Are in and Pills Are Out

The male enlargement patch is the most modern all natural method these days and has been developed for ease of use and convenience. They are the most discreet solution that will go with you anywhere, in the home, on business or on your vocations. Read on to learn exactly how this penis enhancement system is designed to work.

Male enhancement patches are a product that men can wear without anyone asking any questions. This product is the easiest of all enlargement methods that you simply will not need to worry or ask any questions yourself! This is very unlike the majority of other enlargement methods that are more complicated for example, having to take pills at regular intervals throughout the day, working out how to attach devices to your manhood without causing any pain or injury. Getting your head around too many exercises is tiresome, although some of these exercises can be easier to understand if you follow a professional program.

The penis patch is one of the newest forms of penis enlargement on the market, and already, the results are outstanding. In comparison to the pill there appears to be quite noticeable difference in results.

By using 100% natural penis enhancement patches rather than oral pills you will experience 4 major benefits:

1. Using enlargement patches is easier than remembering to take pills several times a day. You just place the patch close to the penis. You replace the male enlargement patch every three days.

2. The problem with using pills is that your body can not absorb all of the nutrients at once and most will go right through your system. Penis enhancement patches overcome this by providing you with a sustained release throughout the day.

3. The ingredients in the patch enters the bloodstream directly through the skin. This method of delivery is different to pills where the ingredients must first through the digestive system. Thus these natural products work much faster than pills resulting in noticeable penis growth in 1-2 weeks.

4. Male enhancement patches gives permanent penis enlargement results, unlike pills, provided you do a couple of really simple enlarging exercises leading patch manufacturers recommend in addition.

These fast acting natural products have been clinically tried and tested and it is now medically proven that this effortless method can dramatically enlarge a small or average small penis. You can now actually enlarge your penile length and girth to sizes you previously thought were impossible!

Read This Report if You Are Considering Medication to Treat Your ...

Cardizem is a medication used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure), angina (chest pain), and certain heart rhythm disorders. Cardizem is a calcium channel blocker. It works by relaxing the muscles of your heart and blood vessels allowing blood to pass more freely thereby reducing blood pressure.

It should be taken whole, never crushed or chewed, and should be taken at the same time every day with a full glass of water. You should not stop taking Cardizem suddenly as it may make your condition worse. Even if you feel well do not stop taking it unless directed to do so by your doctor.

If you are pregnant do not take Cardizem as it can cause harm to your unborn child. This is excreted in breast milk, therefore nursing mothers are encouraged to not use Cardizem.

As with any prescription medications, side effects may occur. It can effect your thinking and reactions, therefore do not drive or do anything that requires you to be alert until you see how you react to Cardizem. Make sure to tell your doctor of any other medications you are taking including non-prescription medications and herbal supplements. if you are allergic to any drugs be sure to let your doctor know. It is very important that your doctor know of any medical conditions that you have including kidney disease, liver disease, or congestive heart failure as it may not be the best choice for you.

While on Cardizem treatment your blood pressure will need to be monitored on a regular basis. Your doctor may adjust your dosage of it depending on these results. Your doctor may also recommend kidney and liver function testing while on or before prescribing Cardizem. This may be the right choice for treating your hypertension but remember only you and your doctor can determine if Cardizem is right for you.

Cholesterol Medications - Things You Need To Know

Gemfibrozil Lopid - when administered together with a special diet - is successful in treating very high serum triglycerides levels that may lead to inflammation of the pancreas (a condition known as pancreatitis). Serum triglycerides are fatty elements found in your blood. If your body does not respond to a simple strict diet, then you may want Gemfibrozil Lopid.

Gemfibrozil Lopidis moreover used to diminish coronary heart disease risk in patients who need to lose weight but do not respond to exercise, diet, or any cholesterol- or triglyceride-lowering drug.

Can I take Gemfibrozil Lopid?

Your doctor can determine this for you. As a common rule, though, Gemfibrozil Lopid is only given to people whose bodies do not respond to exercise and other and weight loss systems (including a strict diet). Gemfibrozil Lopid is not a cure - it is only a supplement to customary weight loss measures. If you are serious about getting all the gains of the medication, you have to stick to the exercise and diet program that your doctor will also advise. Gemfibrozil Lopid can assist in keeping your cholesterol at standard levels and in lowering your heart disease risk - but only if you do your part, too.

What's the correct dosage?

Gemfibrozil Lopid is supposed to be taken about half an hour (30 minutes) earlier than your breakfast and evening meal, closely as your doctor prescribed. If you accidentally miss a dose, don't upset - just take Gemfibrozil Lopid over again as soon as you realize that you've missed a dose. By no means take two Gemfibrozil Lopid doses in unison.

Does it have any side effects?

Yes. Like any other drug, Gemfibrozil Lopid may set off side effects that are hard to foresee, such as abdominal pain, constipation, acute appendicitis, diarrhea, fatigue, eczema, headache, indigestion, vomiting, vertigo, and rash. If these side effects keep on, notify your physician as soon as possible. Only your physician will be able to make a decision whether you should continue taking Gemfibrozil Lopid or not.

In some extraordinary cases, Gemfibrozil Lopid sets of malignancy, abdominal pain (occasionally causing appendectomy), gallbladder disease, or other grave and perhaps fatal disorders in the abdomen.

Warning

The following drugs may cause muscle-wasting if used at the same time with Gemfibrozil Lopid.

- Lipitor (Atorvastatin)

- Mevacor (Lovastatin)

- Lescol (Fluvastatin)

- Zocor (Simvastatin)

- Pravachol (Pravastatin)

These drugs lower cholesterol.

Gemfibrozil Lopid is supposed to moreover not be taken by patients whose cholesterol levels are only slightly elevated, since its benefits hardly outweigh the risks of severe side effects.

News About the Type 2 Diabetes Drug Avandia

Studies continue to try to dive into the cause and cure for type 2 diabetes and the drug once thought to be a major breakthrough for type 2 diabetes, Avandia, is coming under a lot of significant study and skepticism.

Health Canada is currently claiming that the deaths of six Canadians are "very likely" linked to the Type 2 Diabetes drug Avandia, which of course raises concerns about whether the potential detrimental effects of the drug are worth the risks. Other studies on the drug Avandia indicate that it may be linked to a much higher risk of heart attack in certain patients, according to reports in the respected New England Journal of Medicine. To support this study, Health Canada says that 28 Canadians who had been taking Avandia for type 2 diabetes had suffered heart attacks since being introduced to the drug Avandia in 2000. In the US, there have been 19 confirmed reports of heart attacks from US citizens who have been taking Avandia.

While this is not a lot of people based on the number of total people taking Avandia, the number is statistically significant, and people taking a drug for one ailment should not be "e encouraging" another, potentially life-threatening disorder. More clinical study is needed, but the evidence exists that there is probably a connection between the heart attacks and Avandia. While the studies do not conclusively prove that Avandia is the culprit and Avandia has definitely been ruled out in some of the heart attack cases, there are strong signs that it is a factor in the majority of the cases.

A review published in the New England Journal of Medicine indicates multiple studies on the drug Avandia which indicate a higher risk of heart attack in approximately 43% of patients who take the drug.

The pharmaceutical firm GlaxoSmithKline PLC manufactures Avandia. To add to their problems, the Food and Drug Administration has declined to grant a priority review to their newest experimental cancer vaccine Cervarix, which serves to add pressure to the company with the current controversy surrounding their manufacture of Avandia. The Avandia family of drugs manufactured by Glaxo includes Avandamet and Avandaryl, which showed sales last year of well over a billion dollars. This makes the Avandia family of drugs the second best selling drug after the company's Advair product which is for asthma treatment.

While Glaxo claims that the reported incidents of heart attack are "statistically the same" for Avandia patients as those patients who are on other anti-diabetes drugs, it remains clear that further research and study is required before these drugs can be claimed safe and effective for treating what they were designed to treat.

Zyprexa Plaintiffs Obtain "No Risk" Lawsuit Loans to Bridge ...

"No one pays much attention to how a person who has been injured is going to live while waiting for a case to settle, the legal system tends to put people who cannot afford to wait for their money at a disadvantage."

- Boston Bar Association Ethics Committee Chairman, Gerry Cohen

With these words millions of U.S. consumers every year find out 1st hand the truthfulness of Mr. Cohen's assessment of the legal system; but who more so than the thousands who have suffered tragically at the hands of Ely Lillies drug Zyprexa.

"Zyprexa ruined my life" describes litigant Merrit Salyer who will be one of the first to receive a lump sum settlement in the new 700 million dollars settlement launched last Thursday by multi-billion dollar corporate giant Eli Lilly, manufacturer of Zyprexa. The “extreme hardship I suffered from Zyprexa in both physical & mental suffering, well all I can say is Zyprexa stole my health and it nearly killed me, as I spent 2 weeks in a trauma unit from diabetic ketoacidosis where I almost died and now I live with a lifetime of complications diabetes has left me with” says Salyer of his brief 2 month encounter with Zyprexa.

The costs injured plaintiffs sustain are far more than the actual pain and suffering, as Salyer states, “injuries affect everything including your standard of living, you just can’t maintain the same earnings. Then throw in future credit and borrowing and you begin to know the real long term side effects no one takes into consideration and that's why injured plaintiffs need help in many areas to recover."

Is there a solution? 1st Choice Funding offers Zyprexa plaintiffs many and one is by offering cash in hand now, when Zyprexa plaintiffs need it most vs. when settlement finally occurs. The program is called "No Win ...No Pay... No Risk" Lawsuit Loans and this innovative program puts Zyprexa litigants in the position to receive cash prior to settlement with no credit, employment, monthly payments, collateral, or risk no matter how long Zyprexa settlement takes.

"No Win...No Pay... No Risk" Lawsuit Loans are unheard of from traditional banking approaches to lending money conventional lenders agree. “1st Choice Funding’s Lawsuit Loans aren’t really loans at all and that’s why conventional approaches aren’t how we make determinations for funding” said 1st Choice Funding company president Timothy S. Gray, “lawsuit loans are what consumers call them but in reality what they are advances made on future settlement, and that’s something conventional lenders just don’t understand.”

What does Zyprexa victim Salyer think of the opportunity to get cash now vs. the lengthy settlement period ahead for the plaintiffs? Salyer says with conviction, "It's about time Zyprexa did something good for us, I think it's a great program and I recommend it to everyone in the financial need my family and I are in, it's really been a god send for us"

Not only those with injuries from Zyprexa can obtain financial releif today as 1st Choice Funding's resources provide "No Win...No Pay...No Risk" Lawsuit Loans for all these case types;

Did You Know That High Blood Pressure Can Be Treated Without the ...

Can High Blood Pressure Be Treated Without The Need For Drugs?

Orthodox medical Doctors make 4 mistakes when it comes to treating patients with high blood pressure. For that matter, whether it's a cardiovascular problem like high blood pressure or any disease related illness, these 4 mistakes always persist.

The 4 Mistakes That Orthodox Medical Doctors Make

1. The symptoms are the cause of illness.

No! Symptoms are only the manifestations of the root cause: Symptoms are knock on effects or warning signs...

2. They pay no real attention to diet and exercise.

3. They practically ignore the mind/spirit connection and its influences on health.

4. Very little or no consideration is given to water and its pharmacological role.

How does the above fit into the orthodox medical approach when it comes to treating high blood pressure? What are the alternative naturopathic solutions and how well do they work?

These are very important questions, since the Journal of the American Medical Association (Oct. 2002; 288: 1882-1888) reported that middle-aged or older people in the USA have a 90% chance of developing high blood pressure.

First, lets consider how it could be for someone suffering from high blood pressure. He/she may be overweight or feeling worn out and sluggish, dehydrated, or not breathing well... So the doctor prescribes the pills: Lotensin, Mevacor, Cardizem, Procardia...etc, any of these to normalize the blood pressure. As time goes by, months then years, side effects manifest as a consequence of the pills. -How?

Well, without going into a long-winded harangue it basically goes like this:

Remember the above 4 mistakes. Because pills only treat the symptoms, the underlying root-cause is ignored and yes, it still persists. Due to a history of bad diet or a lack of exercise or stress, the inner walls of the patient's arteries are lined with plaque. This results in a narrowing of the arteries. What does orthodox medicine do? Instead of getting to the root-cause by permanently unblocking the arteries, the blood pressure lowering drugs reduce the activity of the heart so that the blood pressure gage reads normal.

-What are the consequences of this quick fix? Remember, the heart is now less active, and because the walls of the arteries are narrow and the blood pressure is normalized, like any tube supplying liquid with a smaller lumen (the space inside), the outflow is restricted. This means that the blood supply from the heart to the target organs in the body is restricted. Because the oxygen demands from the target organs are not met due to this lack of blood supply, a whole range of illnesses can result. On the long-term this could include: a weaker heart, degeneration of other organ tissue and lung congestion, which ultimately could result in death.

Other reported side effects due to the above blood pressure lowering drugs include headaches, dizzy spells, queasiness, cardiac arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats), low blood pressure, sexual dysfunction, mood swings, depression, memory loss and changes in personality...

Another orthodox medical approach is angioplasty, where an operation is performed to unblock the arteries and allow blood to flow more freely again. However, because it is only a quick fix, treating the symptom, in many cases re-occlusion (narrowing of the arteries through plaque returning) occurs.

Surgeons Oh Those Heralded Heroes!

I'm sure there was a time in your life when you were told stories about surgeons and how great they were with their life-saving operations... Here's the truth about heart bypass surgery. The overall survival rate for patients post-operation is no different than those who chose to do nothing at all! (New England Journal of Medicine May 22, 1997 and American of Journal Cardiology June 1998). Notice I took the trouble to reference 2 studies. There are many others that document the same findings. Other studies show that there is a 13% chance that these patients will die on the operating table (Dr Tim O'Shea 2007).

Well, what do you expect? If you only treat the symptoms with temporary house-cleaning methods the problem, plaque growth on the inner walls of the arteries, will return. And as for those with coronary bypass surgery, an unblocking of the arteries that supply the heart with blood, what about all the other arteries in their body? Why should they be any different? Guess what condition these arteries will be in?

What Are The Alternatives?

The first thing to realize is that in order for a patient to be cured, the root-cause of the high blood pressure needs to be addressed. The root-cause can be addressed effectively by lowering high blood pressure through natural approaches. -This indeed is in line with effectively correcting the above 4 mistakes that doctors make.

Cymbalta Fibromyalgia Treatments For Depression

Cymbalta, which is an antidepressant, is believed to reduce depression and is also considered to be a possible benefit to women suffering from Fibromyalgia. This illness, which is still considered rare even though it affects millions of Americans, affects more women and men. Even though the cause of it remains unknown, Fibromyalgia is a growing problem that many are forced to cope with on a daily basis. A Cymbalta Fibromyalgia treatment is designed to help treat both the emotional and physical symptoms of depression. In general, individuals who are dealing with a chronic illness often become depressed and sometimes turn to the world of medicine for assistance.

It is important to note that Cymbalta is not approved for the treatment of Fibromyalgia, but studies have found that it could be beneficial in depression. Because it is thought to help treat depression, which is often the result of a chronic illness, some experts believe that there are benefits that coincide with this illness and a Cymbalta Fibromyalgia treatment.

Cymbalta Fibromyalgia treatments can cause various side effects with the most common being nausea, constipation, dry mouth, decreased appetite, etc. Cymbalta is not for everyone, especially to those who are allergic to it's ingredients. In addition, individuals with liver or kidney problems, have been diagnosed with glaucoma or consume large amounts of alcohol should speak with their physician prior to taking Cymbalta. Women who are pregnant or nursing should not take Cymbalta and should make their physician aware of any conditions prior to accepting any type of prescription.

Prior to accepting any type of prescription medication, individuals must make sure that their physician is made fully aware of any medicines that are currently being consumed and/or any current illnesses. In order to safely provide treatments, a physician must be made fully aware of the circumstances surrounding the patient's health.

Patients who are being treated for depression should be monitored closely in order to ensure that the depression does not worsen or become increasingly dangerous to the patient. Individuals who are severely depressed may require hospitalization and extended care beyond that which a prescription-based medicine can offer. Anyone who feels that their depression is worsening should consult their physician for a proper diagnosis and a recommended treatment course.

Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) Review

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are among the most commonly prescribed categories of drugs worldwide in the treatment of pain and inflammation in many conditions.

NSAIDs are used primarily to treat inflammation, mild to moderate pain, and fever. Specific uses include the treatment of headaches, arthritis, sports injuries, and menstrual cramps. Aspirin is used to inhibit the clotting of blood and prevent strokes and heart attacks in individuals at high risk. NSAIDs also are included in many cold and allergy preparations. Two drugs in this category, ibuprofen and naproxen, also reduce fever.

Uses

NSAIDs are usually indicated for the treatment of acute or chronic conditions where pain and inflammation are present. These drugs also are effective in some neuropathic pain syndromes when used with other analgesics. NSAIDs are generally indicated for the symptomatic relief of the following conditions:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Acute gout

  • Inflammatory arthropathies (e.g. ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, Reiter's syndrome)

  • Dysmenorrhoea (painful menstruation)

  • Headache and migraine

  • Postoperative pain

  • Mild-to-moderate pain due to inflammation and tissue injury

  • Back pain and sciatica.

  • Sprains, strains, and rheumatism.

  • Dental pain.

  • Pain from kidney stones (renal colic).

  • To reduce fever

  • Other painful conditions, especially where there is inflammation.

Drugs In The Class

There are several different types of NSAIDs:

  • Salicylates: aspirin (Ascriptin, Bayer, Ecotrin), diflunisal (Dolobid, Diflunisal Tablets), salsalate (Argesic SA, Disalcid, Salflex, Salsitab, Mono Gesic)

  • Arylalkanoic acids: diclofenac (Voltaren, Cataflam), indomethacin (Indocin)

  • 2-Arylpropionic acids (profens): ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), ketoprofen (Orudis, Oruvail), naproxen (Naprosyn, Alleve), carprofen

  • Pyrroles: ketorolac (Toradol)

  • Enolic acids (oxicams): piroxicam (Feldene), meloxicam (Mobic)

  • Sulphonanilides: nimesulide

  • Napthylalkanones: nabumetone (Relafen)

Mechanism Of Action

NSAIDs work by suppressing the production of fatty acids called prostaglandins that cause inflammation and pain. They do this by blocking the action of an enzyme, cyclooxygenase (COX). This enzyme is responsible for converting precursor acids into prostaglandins.

In the periphery NSAIDs work by decreasing the sensitivity of the nociceptor to painful stimuli induced by heat, trauma, or inflammation. In the central nervous system, they are thought to function as antihyperalgesics and block the increased transmission of repetitive incoming signals to higher centers. In effect, they modulate perception of pain caused by repetitive stimulation from the periphery.

Differences Between NSAIDs

NSAIDs vary in their potency, duration of action, and the way in which they are eliminated from the body. Another important difference is their ability to cause ulcers and promote bleeding. The more an NSAID blocks Cox-1, the greater is its tendency to cause ulcers and promote bleeding.

Choice of NSAID for chronic and disabling inflammatory joint diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis is governed by age, diagnosis, degree of severity, relative gastrointestinal safety, tolerability, and relative efficacy in the given clinical situation. It is a common misconception that all NSAIDs are therapeutically equally efficacious and any one of them could be used for the given indication. Use of multiple NSAIDs should be discouraged. An agent with comparatively less gastrointestinal (GI) side effects like ibuprofen and diclofenac should be preferred in place of indomethacin, piroxicam, or naproxen, which are more gastrotoxic. In conditions where diagnosis is uncertain, the medicine should be empirically chosen and given for a week or so and if the response is adequate it should be continued until side effects mandate its withdrawal. Ankylosing spondylitis responds better to a particular NSAID like indomethacin. It is probably related to its stronger inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.

Aspirin is a unique NSAID, not only because of its many uses, but because it is the only NSAID that is able to inhibit the clotting of blood for a prolonged period (4 to 7 days). This prolonged effect of aspirin makes it an ideal drug for preventing the blood clots that cause heart attacks and strokes. Most other NSAIDs inhibit the clotting of blood for only a few hours.

The major NSAIDs of potency comparable to opioids are diclofenac and ketorolac. Moderate postoperative pain, for example, may be managed using these agents. The overall analgesic effect of 30 mg of ketorolac is equivalent to that of 6 to 12 mg of morphine. Efficacy has been demonstrated for postsurgical pain including oral, orthopedic, gynecologic, and abdominal procedures. Efficacy for acute musculoskeletal pain has also been shown. Ketorolac causes ulcers more frequently than any other NSAID and is, therefore, not used for more than five days.

Naproxen provides effective relief in acute traumatic injury and for acute pain associated with migraine, tension headache, postoperative pain, postpartum pain, pain consequent to various gynecologic procedures, and the pain of dysmenorrhea.

Possible Side Effects

NSAIDs are associated with a number of side effects. The two main adverse drug reactions, associated with NSAIDs relate to gastrointestinal effects and renal effects of the agents. These effects are dose-dependent, and in many cases severe enough to pose the risk of ulcer perforation, upper gastrointestinal bleeding, and death, limiting the use of NSAID therapy.

  • Gastrointestinal adverse reactions. The most common risk of NSAIDs is that they can cause ulcers and other problems in your esophagus, stomach, or small intestine. Common gastrointestinal side effects include: nausea, dyspepsia, vomiting, diarrhea, gastric ulceration/bleeding. Risk of ulceration increases with duration of therapy, and with higher doses. To help protect the stomach, NSAIDs should always be taken with food or directly after a meal.

  • High Blood Pressure and Kidney Damage. NSAIDs reduce the blood flow to the kidneys, which makes them work more slowly. When your kidneys are not working well, fluid builds up in your body. The more fluid in your bloodstream, the higher your blood pressure. If you take NSAIDs in high doses, the reduced blood flow can permanently damage your kidneys.

  • Allergic Reactions. NSAIDs can also cause extreme allergic reactions. People with asthma are at a higher risk for experiencing serious allergic reaction to NSAIDs. Many specialists recommend that people who have asthma stay away from any NSAID, especially if they have sinus problems or nasal polyps.

Use of aspirin in children and teenagers with chicken pox or influenza has been associated with the development of Reyes's syndrome. Therefore, aspirin and nonaspirin salicylates (e.g. salsalate) should not be used in children and teenagers with suspected or confirmed chicken pox or influenza.

Indomethacin, ketoprofen and piroxicam appear to have the highest prevalence of gastrointestinal adverse drug reactions, while ibuprofen (lower doses) and diclofenac appear to have lower rates.

Serious side effects are especially likely with one nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, phenylbutazone. Patients of age 40 and over are especially at risk of side effects from this drug, and the likelihood of serious side effects increases with age.

Precautions And Contraindications

NSAIDs cannot be used in the following cases:

  • Allergy to aspirin or any NSAID

  • Aspirin should not be used under the age of 16 years

  • During pregnancy

  • During breast feeding

  • On blood thinning agents (anticoagulants)

  • Suffering from a defect of the blood clotting system (coagulation)

  • Active peptic ulcer

Cost

Numerous NSAIDs are available as generics: diclofenac, etodolac, fenoprofen, flurbiprofen, ibuprofen, indomethacin, ketoprofen, meclofenamate, naproxen, piroxicam, sulindac, and tolmetin. Only meloxicam (brand name: Mobic), nabumetone (Relafen), and oxaprozin (Daypro) are available by brand name only. Generic medications may be an equally effective and less expensive treatment option.

Conclusions

All NSAIDs are similarly effective. The choice of which NSAID to try first is usually empiric. If one doesn't provide adequate pain control, try switching to another. All NSAIDS when used chronically can be associated with the development of ulcers. Differences in adverse effects seem to exist between different NSAIDs. Follow with your doctor closely and watch for signs or symptoms of gastrointestinal bleeding such as stomach pain and blood in the stools. Some NSAIDs are available in extended-release formulations that require less frequent dosing.
